Dad took Mom on a dinner date one night, which gave us girls (and our friends from church) time to prepare a surprise for mom by the time they arrived home.It took just a bit of an effort to get mom home from dinner for the surprise. After eating, dad casually announced that it was time to head back home. Mom wanted to do a bit of shopping on the way home, but dad tried to convince her to postpone the shopping till another day. (Mom told us later that she thought that was odd. At that moment, she couldn’t understand why dad would not let her go to the store.:->)
Finally, they pulled up to our house (time always seems to goes slow when you want to surprise someone!). Then, from inside the house, we all heard mom tell dad that she forgot to drop something off at the neighbor’s house. (Something she meant to do before their dinner)
So, as mom drove away to our neighbor’s house, dad tried to think of a way to get mom back for the surprise party. Because, as most ladies know, we have a potential to talk and visit for quite some time—especially if we do not have anywhere to go afterwards.:-) Since mom did not expect anything to happen here at home, she probably did not see any need to hurry back right away.
Eventually, Dad came up with a solution. So, he texted mom to hurry back home, because we had to call our Aunt and wish her a happy birthday (which we really did do later). Although that may have sounded funny at the moment, it worked! Mom came back home. :-)

With several dim lights on, the surprise crew lined up single file inside our dark kitchen. As soon as mom and dad walked in the front door, the surprise began. It started off with Melissa and Sarah (Meagan was holding the camera) walking out of the kitchen holding candles and singing “Silent Night.” (We hoped the Christmas song would just grab her attention and make her curious)
Then, one by one, everyone else followed out of the kitchen. At first, mom only saw Sarah and Melissa, but then she noticed the line growing as more people shadows followed them out of the kitchen singing along as well.:-) As soon as everyone had emerged from the dark kitchen, we shouted, “Surprise!” and showered her with birthday hugs. And what else would the birthday celebrant do at that time, but cry? She was so touched to see everyone there.:-)
The rest of the evening, we tasted some some authentic Filipino desserts that our friends brought. Then we played a few games such as a “How well do you know Mrs. Feeny?” quiz. Also, we all read mom our special notes, which everyone had written before the party. Another Kleenex moment!:-) It was really special for mom to have each of these ladies here to help celebrate her birthday with her (even if it was a bit early).
Surprises are so much fun—especially when they are done with others and for someone special.:-)
