Our Time In Colorado

After our time with Grandpa and Grandma in Missouri, we headed for the mountainous state of Colorado, where we visited our aunts and uncles on our mom's side of the family.

During our stay with Aunt Carla and Uncle Mike, we enjoyed spending much of our time in the mountains. We had the chance to ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which was surrounded by pine trees and located near a quaint, historic settlement called Georgetown. During the 1800s, several miners lived in this small town and used the nearby railroad to reach a silver mine.


On one of the railroad stops, we had the opportunity to tour the actual silver mine, which miners used many years ago. We saw some real silver “veins” in the rock under the ground and caught a glimpse into the life of miners from that time period. [interesting fact: many of them only lived to be 25-30 years old because of the dust and rock particles that they inhaled]




In order to satisfy our appetite for the magnificent mountain scenery and cool weather, we finished our time in the mountains by hiking up a trail to St. Mary’s Glacier. After we Feenys finally overcame much shortness-of-breath (guess that comes with originating from a state with lower altitude;->), we enjoyed the beautiful hike.






On the way up to the glacier, we walked beneath many cone-shaped pine trees and glimpsed several chipmunks along the way. Almost at the top of our hike, we witnessed a picturesque view near the glacier. So, of course we took out our camera for some photo time. :-)

Once we made it to the glacier, the soft, icy snow was so inviting! You can probably guess what we did.:-) It was time for a brief snowball fight! Actually, Sarah and Uncle Mike did most of the snowball throwing, while the rest of us watched and took pictures.:-) But we still managed to make some snowballs too.:-)

We spent the remainder of our trip in Colorado at Aunt Sherry and Uncle Don’s house in Colorado Springs. On one Sunday afternoon, Aunt Carla and Uncle Mike drove us down to Aunt Sherry and Uncle Don’s house, where we all spent the day celebrating Sarah’s 18th birthday. We surprised her with an early celebration. :-)


After we arrived, greeted everyone, and visited for a minute, we all decided to go bring the luggage inside. So, hoping to prepare some of the birthday decorations, we asked Sarah to bring the suitcases in, (promising to help her by meeting her at the door to bring them inside). While she went out to the car, the rest of us scrambled around in the inside trying to set up all the balloons, flowers, and cake before she came back in. :-) By the time she walked in the door, we all yelled, “Happy Birthday!” as she noticed the party decorations on the table and beamed. :-)



Since all of us love to shop, ;-) Aunt Sherry took mom and us girls all to Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City. Both of these little places had numerous stores filled with gift items, souvenirs, as well as all kinds of delicacies to satisfy one’s sweet tooth.;-) So, of course we had a terrific day window shopping together and buying some souvenirs.:-)

We loved seeing our aunts and uncles while we were in Colorado as well as meeting our new “cousins:” Susie and Kimmy (Aunt Sherry and Uncle Don’s dogs). Our entire trip to the States was so refreshing. We enjoyed every single minute of it! The time that we spent with our family, the beautiful weather, and the lovely mountainous scenery made those three weeks so memorable and special for us. :-)
