Not too long ago, someone told us about a Japanese restaurant on Clark base that was called Zen’s. After hearing that it was very similar to Shoguns in the States—only with a bit less show for a pretty decent price—we decided to give this place a try. Hoping to share this treat, we invited our friends the Wades and the Herters to join us.:-) We could probably say this restaurant passed the test. ;-) It was great!
When we arrived at the restaurant and squeezed all 13 of us around a long table (where typically only around 9 people would fit), we sat back and watched the “show” of our dinner being flipped, chopped, and sautéed less than 2 feet in front of us. In between conversations, we sat captivated as the two chefs cooked in front of us, each working on separate giant, flat skillets (both at each ends of the table). These guys cooked with plenty of flair as they chopped and grilled our dinner.
Some of us even had the opportunity to experience this kind of cooking first hand while we were there! The chef at our table let Emke and Weibke Herter attempt to crack an egg open with a metal spatula while throwing it up in the air. Although it was a lot harder than it looked, both of the girls succeeded and cracked open the egg on their first attempt.:-)
The whole meal was enjoyable—especially after watching the chefs cook it.:-) We enjoyed every minute of our meal from being captivated by the cuisine, to visiting with each other, to trying some of the chef’s skills, and even to literally catching our bowls of rice when the chef throw them to us! It was definitely a good evening to share with friends.:-)
