Merry Christmas?

Back in the States we always thought that late October was early to celebrate Christmas. Well, over here in the Philippines, the Christmas celebration beings in the “ber” months—September, October, November, and December. What a shocker! :-)

In early September, people set out Christmas decorations, give gifts, go caroling, and play Christmas music throughout the stores. We found it interesting to know that it is common for people to say “Merry Christmas” as a hint for a donation (similar to “trick-or-treat” on Halloween).

A week or so ago, Mom and Meagan went shopping at the store. As they were walking down the aisles, they heard “Silver Bells” and “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer” playing throughout the building…. in the middle of September!

When Meagan heard the songs, she remembered what our friends had said about Christmas celebrations starting early. As soon as she heard the music, she turned to Mom to see her response. Mom obviously heard the music too, because Meagan simply said with a smile, “Uh…Mom….” and Mom replied with a chuckle “Yes…I know!” :-)

At first, it seemed odd to celebrate Christmas so early. Yet, the true reason for Christmas should not be remembered only in the month of December or even the “ber” months. Instead, God wants us to remember His Gift and to share His good news of salvation with others all year long! Remembering Christ should not only be a seasonal thing, but it should be a daily remembrance. :-)
